How to Use the Fraction Calculator

This free fraction calculator performs addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions (including mixed numbers). Results are automatically simplified to lowest terms and displayed as an improper fraction, mixed number, and decimal simultaneously.

Three Modes

  • Calculate Fractions — Perform arithmetic on two fractions or mixed numbers
  • Simplify — Reduce a single fraction to its lowest terms
  • Decimal → Fraction — Convert a decimal number (e.g. 0.625) to a fraction (5/8)

Fraction Arithmetic Rules

  • Addition/Subtraction: Find a common denominator, then add/subtract numerators. a/b ± c/d = (a×d ± c×b) ÷ (b×d)
  • Multiplication: Multiply numerators together and denominators together. a/b × c/d = (a×c) ÷ (b×d)
  • Division: Multiply by the reciprocal of the divisor. a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it simplify fractions automatically?
Yes. Every result is automatically reduced to its simplest form (lowest terms / GCD reduction).
Can it handle mixed numbers (e.g. 2½)?
Yes. Enter the whole number part in the "Integer" field, numerator in the top field, and denominator in the bottom field. For 2½, enter 2 as the integer, 1 as numerator, 3 as denominator.
Can I convert a decimal to a fraction?
Yes. Use the "Decimal → Fraction" mode. Enter a decimal like 0.75 to get 3/4.
Can it simplify a single fraction?
Yes. Use the "Simplify" mode. Enter any fraction and click Calculate to reduce it to lowest terms.
Does it handle negative fractions?
Yes. Enter a minus sign in the integer or numerator field.
What operations does it support?
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of two fractions (including mixed numbers and integers).
